Q: What is the maximum power on time until power off?
A: The maximum full charge power on time (with player paused), as observed during performance trials was more than 44 hours.
Q: What is a realistic “power on” to “power off” during normal usage?
A: The battery life is about 12 hours while playing via the built in speaker at medium volume. The playing time on a full charge will be longer if the volume is lower or the headphone jack is being used instead.
Q: How well does the solar charging perform in real life?
A: The solar charging panel size is limited by the practical size of the device. The solar panel’s performance will vary with the quality of the solar energy being received at the time. Your latitude, season, atmosphere, weather, clouds, etc will cause solar charging performance to vary. In our testing under moderate solar conditions, one hour of solar charging, with a low battery, will yield about 20 minutes of audio playing operation. When the battery has a higher charge, the player’s energy use is more efficient and one hour of charging will yield about 30 minutes of playing time.
Q: We have heard that LiPo batteries can be damaged, or have their lifespan shortened, by allowing their charge level to get too low. What protections are in place to keep this damage from happening?
A: Our player has a battery management system. We have tuned the firmware in this system to flash the red LED when the player is approximately 30 minutes from shutdown. When the battery management firmware detects that the battery charge is becoming dangerously low, the player operation stops and the player turns off. After the player stops, this low power system continues to monitor the battery’s health, until USB or Solar charging returns the battery cell to a voltage that is safe for operation.
Q: How do I know when the player has achieved is maximum volume?
A: When the + key is pressed, the player will emit “beeps” to indicate that the integrated amplifier is at its maximum output.
Q: How many books are supported in each of the A and B programs?
A: The firmware and flash systems support up to 99 subfolders (books) within each of the programs. This is a maximum firmware limit. Fewer folders are permitted.
